Tasting:
Field Stone Winery (not to be confused with Freestone!) was a last-minute addition to a recent wine trip, and a positive addition it was! Located between Chalk Hill and Alexander Valley, Field Stone makes a number of different wines all from grapes they grow themselves (or source from a neighbor vineyard for a couple of their white wines).
Their tasting room is burrowed into a hillside like a hobbit's den, and to get to the room you walk through their cask room full of wine in mid-aging.

Tasting at Field Stone is $5, refundable with purchase, which gets a visitor a seemingly endless stream of Field Stone wines. We started with a taste of 4 white wines (Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Gewurztraminer, and Chardonnay), followed by Merlot, Syrah, 2 Cabernets side-by-side, a Petite Sirah, and a Petite Sirah Port. Phew! I'm exhausted just typing all of those!

The distinguishing factor across the board here was value. Most if not all of the wines were solid, albeit somewhat unexceptional, but all were very fairly priced. The true standouts were the Petite Sirah and the Petite Sirah Port. Sourced from 100+-year-old vines, the fruit was outstanding for both wines, and the only Petite Sirah Port I've had that comes close to comparing is from Prager. Overall, this was a good tasting experience in an enjoyable setting.

Recommended wine:The Petite Sirah ($35) and Petite Sirah Port ($50, 750ml) were both very good and very reasonably priced given the quality.
