Tasting:
Truett-Hurst was a recommendation from my local friend Elisa. With the inside scoop that this was a great spot for a picnic, we visited just before lunch. The tasting room is modestly sized, with a tasting bar that would comfortably accommodate 8-10 guests, and a side room featuring some interesting and reasonably priced artwork (including an awesome photo of a grinning sheep that should be hanging on my wall!).

We bypassed the white wine and went straight to red, starting with the 2010 White Sheep Pinot Noir. We followed this with the two Zinfandels, the 2009 Red Rooster Zinfandel (my personal favorite at the winery) and the 2009 Rattler Rock Zinfandel. We took a quick departure from the Truett-Hurst label to try two wines (a Syrah and a “Field Blend”) from the “Wine Balance” label, an organic effort by Heath Dolan, the son of Truett-Hurst winemaker Paul. We came back to Truett-Hurst wines with the 2009 Burning Man Petite Sirah and finished with a taste of their Dessert Wine (Port) paired with chocolate truffle. Most of the wines were good but not amazing, but we decided to carry away a bottle of the Red Rooster Zinfandel. We then headed down to the creek for lunch.

Truett-Hurst has a dozen red Adirondack chairs perched along Dry Creek available to guests for picnics or just relaxation. We camped out, enjoyed delicious sandwiches from the nearby Dry Creek General Store, and relaxed for a bit before continuing our tasting room odyssey. In the process of polishing off her sandwich, Stephanie managed to get food all over herself, but luckily the creek was there for her to wash up in. How convenient!

On our way out, the folks at the tasting bar asked where else we were headed. We told them the schedule was open, and we were offered free tasting coupons to Dutcher Crossing and Sbragia. Sounds good to me! If only I knew what that coupon would bring at Sbragia…but that’s a story for a different tasting!

If you’re only interested in wine, there are probably spots in the area that may make you happier, but friendly service at the winery and a great picnic area make this worth a stop, especially for lunch.

Recommended wine: The Red Rooster Zinfandel was good and our favorite of the visit, but not necessarily a wine that will prompt a repeat visit.
