The Meal:
The girl & the fig is the first restaurant of proprietor and CEO Sandra Bernstein, the mastermind behind Estate in Sonoma, the fig Cafe and Wine Bar in Glen Ellen and author of the girl & the fig cookbook. Situated on the historic Sonoma square, this french bistro is a favorite of locals and visitors and our sister-in-law, Krysten Thomas. And if it wasn’t already popular enough, it's sure to become even more so after fans of ABC’s The Bachelor were introduced to it when Bachelor Ben Flajnik took his date Kacie B. there for an intimate meal on the Sonoma square (skip to the 5:30 mark to see the girl & the fig if for some unknown reason you don't want to watch the whole clip).

Don’t expect the girl & the fig to be as empty as it was for Ben’s date, though. This hot spot is consistently packed with foodies excited to try country French favorites such as quiche lorraine and croque monsieur as well as fig classics like the fig and arugula salad. They also have a great assortment of larger entrees including pork belly and scallops and a braised pork shank with roasted garden spaghetti squash. The girl & the fig is known for their cheese and charcuterie plates featuring local and imported artisan cheeses, house cured meats and accompaniments such as fig cake, spiced nuts and baguette. Each time I've eaten here we've gotten some smaller plates and cheese to share. It's a great place to go after a day of tasting when you'd like a cheese plate and a glass of wine.

The girl & the fig is an intimate setting in what feels like an antique home decorated with artwork by artist Julie Higgins. The dining area is partitioned into a few small rooms. In the front there is a great old wooden bar with a sofa and chairs to sit for drinks or a light bite. Scattered around that room are Sandra's fig spreads sold under the fig food label and other gourmet spreads, jellies, soaps and the like for sale. They also have an intimate garden with outdoor seating, lighting, and heat lamps as well (just in case).

The last time I went it was with a group of girls. We got a number of plates to share along with a moderately priced bottle of wine for just under $40 a person.

Recommended food:Anything with figs, as well as the charcuterie. They do try to live up to their name, and even simple dishes like the fig and arugula salad distinguish themselves.
