Tasting:
I didn’t know much about Siduri or Novy before booking an appointment with them for our last visit, other than that the winery was located in a warehouse (like our friends at WesMar!) and that the two wine labels were connected in some way. It turns out that Pinot Noir was their original entrée into winemaking, and they selected the Siduri name and brand for it. After a number of years of only making Pinot, they decided to produce some additional wines as well, and preferred to reserve Siduri for just Pinot. As a result, the Novy label was born.

They're not messing around at Siduri / Novy -- 8 wines!
It was an exciting time to be at the tasting room -- with harvest and crush in full swing, the warehouse was bustling with activity. We tried the Novy Gewurztraminer to wake up our palate as we checked in and then moved in to the tasting area. For our 10am tasting, tables greeted us with four Siduri wines and four Novy wines. Perhaps breakfast would have been a good idea?

We started with the Siduri Pinots while we watched the winemaking activity in the warehouse behind the tasting tables. Four 2009 wines were poured: the Chehalem Mountains Pinot Noir, Ewald Vineyard Pinot Noir (RRV), Sonatera Vineyard Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast), and Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir. All were good, but the single vineyard Pinots really stood out to me. We then moved to the Novy wines, starting with the Stolpman Vineyard Nebbiolo. Without a bottle of Nebbiolo in our house, this was a wine that Steph and I both found very interesting and probably our favorite of the bunch. We finished the Novy wines with three Syrahs: the 2007 Russian River Valley Syrah, 2008 Simpson Vineyard Syrah, and 2008 Santa Lucia Highlands Syrah.

There are no frills at the Siduri/Novy tasting experience, but there really don’t need to be. For me, the winner here was value. While all wines were attractively priced to start, some were significantly discounted (20-40%) to make space, making them some of the better wines per dollar we found on our trip.

Recommended wine: The Nebbiolo was definitely interesting. Of the Pinots, my favorites were the Ewald and the Sonatera; the Russian River Syrah was my favorite Syrah, especially factoring in price.
