Number of wineries: 5
Average rating: 4.34 (projected)
Wine Route Rating: Advanced (300)
Likely highlight of the day: Ramey (unless you're Jane, in which case the best is saved for last)
Notes: This one is named after Jane Hogan Barlin, who loves Chardonnay more than anyone I've ever met. Both Ramey and Stonestreet make 4 different Chardonnays -- a rarity for most wineries -- and Robert Young will typically do a 3-4 year vertical tasting of their excellent Chardonnay. The route is rated "300" (Advanced) due to the multiple sit-down tastings and more intimate settings of most of the stops on the tour.
Location | Start Time | Stop Time | Reservation? | Notes
Ramey (4.75) | 10:00 | 11:15 | A sitdown tasting and the chance to try 4 excellent Chards (plus some even better Cabs)
Lunch in Healdsburg | 11:30 | 12:15 | Plenty of good, quick options (Mateo's, Bovolo, a sandwich from Oakville Grocery)
Stonestreet (4.19) | 12:30 | 1:30 | Another sitdown tasting and another chance to try up to 4 Chards. They advertise that the tasting experience can be customized as well (even more Chardonnay?)
Robert Young (4.63) | 1:45 | 2:30 | Often will do a Chardonnay vertical tasting of 3-4 vintages of their buttery Chardonnay
Chalk Hill (4.13) | 2:45 | 3:30 | The one that started it all -- Chalk Hill Chardonnay is the first "premium" Chardonnay I had that made me recognize the potential of the varietal
Kendall Jackson Wine Center (NR) | 4:00 | 5:00 | Some may find it odd to see KJ on the list, but if you name the tour after someone, you have to put their favorite wine producer on it. Like a visit to Mecca for Jane Hogan Barlin |
