The Meal:
As huge fans of wood fired pizza (see Rosso review) and Redd (see Redd review), we were dying to try the new Richard Reddington pizzeria. We called in March to get a lunch reservation on a Monday in April and were told they could do 12:30pm or 1:30pm, but they were booked at 1:00. Greg talked to them, and the hostess reluctantly agreed to 1:15. We had stopped at Rosso the day before so we could do a great side by side comparison and then headed to our 1:15 reservation the next day. The first thing that struck us on entering was the lack of crowd there. Really, we couldn't get in before 1:30 to a half full restaurant? Readers of this blog will know this is the sort of thing that makes Greg grumble. Not off to a good start.

This start couldn't stop my excitement about trying out the food though. Our table of four decided to do four pizzas that ranged in the $10 - 17 range for a ten inch pie. I had a longstanding personal favorite -- prosciutto with arugula and parmesan -- and Greg had a pizza with sausage, rapini, chile, pickled pepper, tomato, and smoked mozzarella. Both were delicious but to us weren't as good as Rosso or our Chicago favorite, Spacca Napoli. Redd Wood does also offer a number of handmade pastas and house-cured meats (that can be seen in a small room with a glass door next to the bar). We were later told that these are the real winners on the menu so I'd love to go back to try those.

The setting, like Redd is great. The interior has sleek gray and black tones with various dark wood chairs at different tables. There is a large wall with random magazine pages with photos. I can imagine someone collecting their favorite images for months and then pinning them all up in a collage on the wall. It's kind of a mix between a quirky art display and the boards you see used on TV and in movies for murder investigations with pictures and pages pinned up and connected with string. I leaned towards liking it but some might find it weird. The other highlight of the restaurant was the Wappo Hill mailbox. This giant mailbox is featured on the back wall and was acquired by Richard Reddington from the Mondavi Family Wappo Hill home when it was sold.

If Greg forgives their reservation faux pas, I would love to go back to sample the pastas and charcuterie.

Recommended food: Nothing amazing, but common belief is that the house-cured meats are what to have if you go to Redd Wood.
